The city of Rio de Janeiro is really famous for offering some amazing views. And for sure you already heard about the sunset in the city. And for sure, you should appreciate that wonder of nature. We’ll tell you where to find the best views of Rio! Check it out.
MAIN SPOTS TO APPRECIATE THE SUNSET
PEDRA DO ARPOADOR
For sure, this is the most classic and known option in the city. Pedra do Arpoador is located after Copacabana beach, right in the beginning of Ipanema beach.
FAMOUS CARIOCA POINT
After enjoying carioca summer beach, just continous there and this point is considered one of the best places to enjoy the sunset. In this place, you have the view to the sea and the sun will set beside Two Brothers Hill.
Here, people clap for the sunset, ok? So now, you already know what to do once you are there.
RODRIGO DE FREITAS LAGOON
To start, we’ll explain that the lagoon is known as “the heart of Rio” because of its shape. When the sun’s rays touch the waters of the lagoon, the colors of that landscape amaze everyone. You can still take the opportunity and have a picnic in this area.
From here it’s possible to see the Christ the Redeemer and Pedra da Gávea. It also has a pedal boat in the water, you can use the cicloway or run around the lagoon. Look how many options!
If you would like to enjoy the sunset at the Lagoon from a more cozy place, maybe taking some wine or drink, we recommend Palaphita Kitch. This is a bar-restaurant-lounge, with outdoors armchairs and sofas. It has a decoration and a menu inspired in the Amazon. What do you think about that?
SUGAR LOAF MOUNTAIN
Have you ever stopped to think how wonderful would be to watch the sunset in the top of Sugar Loaf? Guys, it’s one of the most amazing views that I’ve ever seen. It’s chilling. That the view of the Sugarloaf Mountain is privileged, we know that.
In addition to the wonderful view of the city, you can also see the Christ the Redeemer, Guanabara Bay, Two Brothers Hill and the colors of the sunbeams in different shades in a special way color every corner of the city.
Find out more details about the Sugar Loaf in our post and how to do the Urca Hill Trail and save money on your trip.
CHRIST THE REDEEMER
This is also a popular spot in the city and offers a beautiful view to enjoy the sunset. But be aware, probably the place will be very tight, since it is one of the most visited points of Rio.
URCA HILL AND MURETA DA URCA
This is a really Carioca sunset, HAHA! And the best? Go to Mureta da Urca to eat, drink and appreciate the light of the sunset in Guanabara Bay. Mureta da Urca is really close to Sugar Loaf Mountain (in Urca neighborhood). With good options of snacks, cold beer and for sure a lot of people will be there with you to enjoy the view in that place.
See more details about Mureta da Urca.
If you go up to Urca Hill (the first hill of Sugar Loaf) you’ll have the view of Urca neighborhood with the boats moored there, besides the Tijuca Forest, Praia Vermelha (Red Beach) and the Botafogo Cove.
Also, Christ the Redeemer can be seen from both sides, and the sunset is behind the statue. You just have to do the trail that starts at Pista Cláudio Coutinho!
PEDRA DO TELÉGRAFO
This is a suggestion, but because the sunset is around 6pm, to go down it’ll be already dark. So, you need to be really careful on the way back down.
This is the famous rock where people make photos that leave us with the impression that they are hanging at the end of the rock and right after that is the abyss … Make no mistake is just photography trick. Meet the Rock early and wait for the sunset up there, you’ll love it.

LITTLE KNOW OPTIONS
MUSEU DE ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEA – MAC Niterói
An option that is not in Rio de Janeiro but on the other side of Guanabara Bay. This museum is a work of architect Oscar Niemeyer and has a very different shape.
A good afternoon tour and sunset view from the museum is spectacular with its golden shades. From there you can still enjoy the Sugar Loaf in a very special way.
PARQUE DA CIDADE
Another option in the city of Niterói is the 270-meter-high Parque da Cidade. The park is located in an environmental preservation area in the San Francisco neighborhood. There is a lookout, where you can see lagoons and ocean beaches.
And look, from this park you not only enjoy the sunset, you will appreciate the most beautiful spots of Rio in the same landscape. From the city of Niterói it is possible to see the Sugar Loaf and Christ the Redeemer practically side by side. No wonder those who live here are proud of this view. OTHER BEACHES IN TOWN
This is one of the beach options so you can enjoy sunset views from a more private spot. Joatinga beach is between São Conrado and Barra da Tijuca, in fact to get there, you have to walk a path between stones of a private condominium in this area. But we guarantee, it is very worth it.
It is known as one of the wild beaches of the city. The sand is fine and blue sea, the point of surfers. Just be aware of the high tide days, it is not recommended to visit this beach.
BARRA DA TIJUCA BEACH
Are you going to enjoy a beach day in Barra? Then you can watch the sunset right there. You will love watching the colors of late afternoon and sea in the same landscape. The beach has a large expanse of sand, it is good to enjoy.
In the case of Pontal beach, you need to go a little further. It is located between Recreio dos Bandeirantes and Macumba beach, in the west of Rio de Janeiro.
The landscape is stunning, but beware, the waves are very strong. On this beach, you can climb the Pontal Rock, enjoy the sunset that looks more like an island. It is the suggestion!
