AquaRio is the biggest marine aquarium in South America, due to so many species and built area.

WHERE IS LOCATED THE AQUARIUM?

AquaRio is located at Porto Maravilha (the docks area) in the city of Rio de Janeiro. This zone underwent a revitalization project of the city’s Port Zone. It is located at the end of Mayor Luiz Paulo Conde (which was transformed into Olympic Boulevard for the Rio 2016 Olympics).

It’s next to Muhammad Ali Square and in front of the Warehouses 7 and 8. You can also visit in this area some other attractions such as the MAR (Rio Art Museum), the Museum of Tomorrow and the “Mural of the Ethnic”, the largest graffiti in the world, it was made by artist Kobra.

Full PriceR$ 120 | R$ 60 for people lives in the State of Rio de Janeiro

MeiaR$ 40 For kids between 3 and 11 years, aged, people with disabilities, young people from 12 to 21 years old (Brazilians), students from the state of Rio (all ages), students up to 24 years old (Brazilians from other states).

Gratuidade: People with special needs (up to two companions).

HOW TO GET TO THE RIO DE JANEIRO AQUARIUM?

USING PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

The cheapest and simplest way is using Metro Rio and VLT (depends on your location).

1 Take the Metro until Cinelândia or Carioca Station (Line 1 and 2), both stations integrate with the VLT.

2 The VLT you should take is Line 1: direction Rodoviária/Praia Formosa. You should go down at the station UTOPIA AquaRIo.

IMPORTANT

To use the VLT you must purchase a ticket. You can get it from Metro Rio stations or from self-service machines at VLT stations (remember that the cards are individual, and only one ticket per person). The value of the card is R$3,00 and the ticket costs R$ 3,80.

USING PRIVATE CAR

If you have a private car it’s possible to park at AquaRio.

Working Hours of Parking Lot: Everyday from 9 to 7pm.

Subject to availability (limited spaces).

1 Entrance to the parking lot is by the service lane next to Muhammad Ali square, near the 450-years-tunnel.

2 There’s no access by Marcello Alencar Tunnel.

HINT: use Waze and Google Maps tools to search for Rua do Aquário or Via Binary 194 – Gamboa.

PARKING LOT TICKETS

There are 3 rates for a period of up to 4 hours.

1 For AquaRio Member visitors who have the Annual Passport benefit R$25,00* and every 30min. additional + R$5,00.

2 For Visitors with AquaRio Tickets R$38,00* and every 30min. additional + R$10,00.

3 For ordinary rotating visitors R$70,00* and every 30min. additional + R$10,00.

OTHER OPTIONS TO GET TO THE AQUARIUM

UBER OU TÁXI

You can still get to know the aquarium using the services of Uber, Cabify or Taxis. They will bring you very close to the entrance of the attraction.

BIKE RIO

Have you considered using bicycles to visit the aquarium? Yes, it is possible. You can use the BIKE RIO (oranges). There is a bike rack in front of the aquarium, if there are spaces you can store yours there too.

DETAILS ABOUT THE AQUARIUM

This is the first marine aquarium in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It was inaugurated on October 31, 2016. It’s located in the central area of the city. The aquarium project had modern features and was a completely private initiative, with 26,000 square meters of built area.

BEYOND FUN

Besides offering the possibility to visit the space and observe many different types of animals, the aquarium still has space for education and research. In the aquarium are about 5,000 animals, and much more than 300 species (including fish, sharks, rays and invertebrates) in 4.5 million liters of water.

One of AquaRio’s main goals is to provide a space for fun and conservation, along with educational activities. Bring visitors the idea of respect for marine animals and ecosystems. A conscientious posture is important and arousing this in children is fundamental.

INTERACTIVITY AND RESOURCES

The structure of the aquarium has a lot of technology and interactivity. With mane underwater tunnels where some marine ecosystems are simulated. The aquarium offers more than 20 enclosures where animals are sheltered by characteristics and different ecosystems.

ATTRACTIONS OF THE AQUARIUM

THE HOST – The virtual fish

Some resources are available to the visitors such as the virtual fish. This attraction has an additional cost. The advantage is that it will accompany you throughout the aquarium tour. You can also leave your host the way you want, that is, you will choose the species, color and the name of the fish. Cool, isn’t it?

VIRTUAL MARINE AQUARIUM

The virtual aquarium, is composed of many interactive panels and visitors can discover important information about certain species. This activity was created because there are some species of animals that cannot have contact with the public to avoid animal stress and safety issues.

In this space you will be able to observe the most microscopic beings from the ocean through the equipment in the aquarium.

SHELL EXHIBITION

Here you can see the most different types of shells available. All this very closely! They have many sizes, colors, functions and shapes. Enjoy! 😊

SURF MUSEUM

Do you like surfing? This attraction is where surfer Rico de Souza exhibits his collection of surfboards and photos from over 50 years in the activity. In this space you can learn a little more about how this activity developed in Brazil and worldwide.

This is a traveling museum, with special pieces such as wooden boards and board evolution since the 60s. Even some pieces were used by big surf names like Mineirinho, Gabriel Medina and Silvana Lima.

OTHERS ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE

DIVING IN THE AQUARIUM

In the tank you can float for 30 minutes and watch the famous animals that live there. The appropriate float suit is available from the aquarium. Minimum age allowed is 12 years old. And minors are entitled to perform the activity with a companion.

IMPORTANT DETAIL

This attraction has an additional cost for the AquaRio ticket. You must schedule in advance for the diving in the aquarium.
