Mural das Etnias – The biggest Graffiti of the World in Rio de Janeiro

WHO IS EDUARDO KOBRA?

That was the creator of Mural das Etnias, the artist Eduardo Kobra. Eduardo is from São Paulo, was born in Jardim Martinica, suburb of São Paulo, in 1975. During his adolescence he acted in hiding while performing graffiti on the city walls. The boy has always been very fond of street art.

In 1990 he began to work making posters and painting sets, thus creating decorative images. His work began to gain notoriety and was invited to undertake other projects and work in advertising agencies.

After 2007, his career has become more visible in the art world. Eduardo is currently one of the greatest muralists in the world. He is the author of works on 5 continents, and his works always send messages on social issues.

ABOUT MURAL DAS ETNIAS

Mural das Etnias is named Todos Somos Um (We are all one). This mural has 3,000 square meters. For the construction of the work, 1,800 liters of white paint were used at the bottom of the wall, 700 liters of colored paint and 3,000 spray cans. The mural is 15 meters high and 170 meters long.

The chosen place to this work was the walls of one old warehouse in the Rio de Janeiro Port area. To finalize the project before the Rio 2016 Olympics, project creator Eduardo Kobra and his team worked for 12 hours daily for two months.

CURIOSITIES

1 Eduardo Kobra said that  it took about 3 months to complete the drawing he used on the mural. The result is faces of native people existing around the globe.

2 Did you know that this mural is a world record? Yes! This mural is the biggest graffiti ever made in PLANET! Believe. Isn’t it fantastic? The news was made official in August 2016 by the Guinness Book.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE MURAL?

With the upcoming sporting event, the author had the idea of uniting the five Olympic rings. Representatives of native tribes of five continents were used in the design: Huli (Oceania), Mursi (Africa), Kayin (Asia), Supi (Europe) and Tapajós (America).

The mural’s main message is to portray, through the union of the Olympic rings, peace and unity among people.

THE IDEA OF REVITALIZATION

Rio de Janeiro is a city full of attractions and interesting points, isn’t it? As the Port area in the city needed urgent improvement, there was an initiative to revitalize this area. The Porto Maravilha project was created, which hosts some of the city’s attractions, with an area of 5 million square meters.

HOW TO GET TO PORT ZONE

One of the easiest and cheapest options to visit the area is by public transport. See some options.  

USING VLT

1 In the city center you can use the services of VLT. You should use the line towards ‘Praia Formosa’ and you can get off at ‘Parada dos Museus’ or ‘Parada dos Navios’ stations.

INFORMATION

To use the VLT you must purchase a ticket. All VLT stations have self-service machines where you buy the cards (R$ 3,00) or recharge if you already have one.

The ticket price of VLT costs R$ 3,80. Cash, credit or debit cards are accepted at the machines. It’s noteworthy that the Metro Rio card is not accepted in the VLT.

TIP

The Rio Card is a good option. This card is accepted in all city transportation including subways, ferries, VLT, trains and buses.

USING METRO RIO

1 You should go up in the composition bound for Uruguay station. You can get off at Uruguaiana station and continue walking to the Port Zone;

2 You can also get off at Cinelândia station in the city center and in the square go to VLT station and take the blue line to ‘Praia Formosa’ and get off at Praça Mauá.

OTHER OPTIONS

If you would like a more direct option to get to the city’s Port Zone, you have the option of using UBER or Taxis.
